kids, motivation and "raw" hot dogs

Once upon a time, Johanna loved raw hotdogs (the fully cooked, prepackaged kind, but cold, not recooked).  She ate as many as she could, as often as she could until the day that her mother told her that she had heard that eating raw hotdogs can cause miscarriages.  From that day forth, Johanna never ate another raw hotdog.

See, wouldn't I be a great mom?  I give up foods I love, to protect children I haven't got.  Just imagine what I would give for them if they really existed (here on earth...I still have faith that they exist, they're just not here yet!)!

I stress-ate like none other today.  I need to remember my future babies when I'm making my food choices.  What I eat now affects them, but the habits that I'm keeping/forming right now will effect them too. I don't need them to have a binge-eating mother.  Food is for nourishment, not for relieving stress.  Gotta work on that.

Here's a fb find that makes you stop and think.  Our choices do affect our children, current and future.

Today:
E: essentrics a/a
B: banana and walnuts
L: chili, banana, nuts and raisins
D: spinach, spring mix, chili, tomatoes, three pieces of bread with peanut butter and marmalade, caramel and marshmellow popcorn, bananas
S: can of chili, banana, and quite possibly something else.  I just can't remember it right now.

Make it Happen

I have a tendency to be critical of my family's lack of decision-making and planning.  I don't love not knowing what's going on when their plans affect my life.  The other day I was whining about how they just need to decide and make it happen if they want something done.  Thinking about it later, I realized that there are many things that I have just been waiting to have happen, instead of taking the initiative and MAKING THEM HAPPEN.

So in an effort to improve my life, and be less hypocritical, I came up with a list as I journaled on Friday about things that I'm going to make happen.  Church today reaffirmed the need to make things happen, not just wait for them to on their own.

These are some things that I want to make happen before school gets out on the 25th:
1- buy a car
2-put in a lawn (if this one is done before I go on my Science Plus trip, it should be soon enough, but I'm shooting for end of May)
3-defend my prospectus (this is going to be the killer...I'm going to have to go to bed earlier, and get up obscenely early to make it happen)
4-discuss communication issues with my family
5-be closer to my ETL potential

Today:
E: 35 minute walk to campus...beautiful!
B: 2 bananas, walnuts  (felt fine, not super hungry, but ate anyway)
L: n/a
D: chili, spring mix, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, 2 bananas (sort of hungry...ate lots of good food! :)

Today:
E: walk home from the mall
B: 3 bananas
L: grapes, 2 bags of wheat thins, one bag of trail mix
S: 2 tortillas with pb and marmalade (What's Mama laid?)
S: pineapple and coconut orange julius

Old habits die hard

I'm in the habit of eating when I get home from school, whether I'm hungry or not.   I did today.
I'm also in the habit of avoiding thesis work or forgetting that it even exists! I also made/ate pb popcorn and enabled family members today.  Gotta stop that.  But I did say something about the lack of communication. Sort of.  Like I said, old habits die hard.

On a good note, I may have found a potential car!  It's not super new or super nice, but it's nicer than my last one by a long shot!  We'll see how it works out.  I'm not loving the mooching habit that has arisen as a result of my carlessness, although Amy and Beth are SAINTS about giving me rides/letting me borrow a vehicle when I'm in need.

Today:
E: essentrics a/a
B: n/a
L: spring mix, spinach, tomatoes, chili, banana
D: 2 tortillas with peanut butter and honey, 5 bananas
S: 2 bananas, peanut butter popcorn

Throwing the scale out with the bathwater...

I know, I know.  That's not how it goes.  But if I had a baby, there would be no throwing out of that longed-for child!  And the scale is what needs to go anyway.

I've been weighing myself everyday for a while now.  After I weighed in this morning, I was thinking about it as I showered.  Why do I weigh myself every day, and what purpose does my daily weigh-in serve?  I think that I've been using it as a form of mild rebellion.  As in, I will eat as much as possible to numb myself and escape reality, devil and scale be darned.  I don't think I'm fat, but I do eat more than I need to when I'm stressed or avoiding, and the daily weigh in isn't giving me the sort of accountability that I need.  I don't need to worry about how much I weigh, I need to worry about my ability to feel and follow the Spirit.

In the movie, The Lucky One, that Beth and I watched last night (not overly impressed, don't really recommend it in spite of the beautiful scenery and beautiful people), a character is drunk and not ready to help when someone he loves desperately needs him.  I've thought about priesthood holders, and how they need to be ready and worthy to serve and bless at a moment's notice.  I need to focus on being ready to serve and rescue at all times.

One of the showering thoughts this morning was that I need to be doing what will help me feel the Spirit most, and not rely on a number on the scale as any sort of truly valid feedback about how I'm treating my body.  The whole purpose of life is to become like God.  When I overeat, or eat my vegan junk food, I don't feel the Spirit as strongly.  It will require more intentionality, but I'm going to ditch the scale for a while, and focus on my level of intuneness as a more difficult, but more important assessment of how I'm doing.  I will do an occasional weigh-in, maybe once every 2 weeks or so (I'll weigh in on my 1st ETL anniversary, May 8th), but for the most part, will just go with what I'm feeling (or not able to feel) for body-treating feedback.

Here are some things that I know I need to do:  sleep more, eat less, listen to my body and don't eat when I'm not hungry.

Avoiding reality

I was so ineffective at school during the times that the kids weren't there...I did work on my presentation for tomorrow night, but other than that, just dinked around, avoiding reality.

After school I ate and algo me hizo inchar, estuve incomoda en el templo.  The temple was so good with Beth and Mariel.  I feel so much peace there.  And I've realized once again, that I need to quit avoiding my thesis, and just make it happen.  It's scary and hard, though, so I avoid it.

Tonight I avoided reality too...ate Cafe Rio (a cute, flirty boy teased me about enjoying my lettuce...) and went to a movie with Beth.  As K would say, "Reality is SO MUCH BETTER!"

I need to work on avoiding reality, and  instead use all that avoidance energy to make my reality better.

D: 2 peanut butter and honey tortillas, broccoli and cauliflower, bananas
S: Cafe Rio salad, banana

Shopping Marathon

I spent 4 hours mission-clothes shopping with Mariel and Beth this afternoon...Marathon!  I wasn't really hungry and wasn't planning to eat after dinner, but then Mariel requested India Palace as her celebration for getting her English project done, and it felt so good to put some nice, warm food in my worn-out body.
In other news, I know I say this every time that I do essentrics more than one day in a row (and sometimes after just one day!) but I LOVE the way it makes me feel!  Pretty sure that my happier attitude and the fact that I was less prone to binging today (and didn't actually eat between meals, just had a second dinner) are due in large part to the fact that I took care of my body by doing essentrics. And my knee isn't hurting today! It wasn't yesterday, either, but the back of my leg was uber tight/sore, which it isn't today!  BENDICIONES!

Today:

I decide.

The reason I'm not done with my thesis is because of choices that I've made.  The reason why I have a full house right now is because of the choice that I've made to let others stay here when they need/want to (we have amazing Momma Wright, Mariel and Cassandra here).  When I'm tired or stressed or happy and content, it all comes back to choices I've made.

Beth isn't happy right now.  I know it's not comfortable for her to be sharing the house with so many people.  And I made her mad/hurt the other day because I said that I was feeling fat (as if her having weight issues automatically precludes anyone else from having issues.  I know I'm not fat.  I do, however, have food issues).  She's not happy here, and when I said that she could choose to go somewhere else, she said that that would be the day...Beth being in charge of her own life.  She is though.  Everyone is.  We can't control all the circumstances of our lives, but there are so many things that we can control, including our attitudes towards those circumstances that we can't control! So I'm trying to own up to what I can control.  My decisions determine my destiny.

Today:
W: 142
B and L: ayunando
D: LOTS of delicious couscous and ratatouille, fruit, and peanut butter popcorn.  Didn't give in to the temptation to eat non-vegan cookies.

Lacking motivation.

I've been home from my mission for 8 years today.  Can't believe it.  I woke up this morning with all the ganas in the world to refine and define myself this year.  Unfortunately, that didn't make it through the day in the food department.  If I'm hungry, it's fine to eat.  If I'm not, I shouldn't, but I have been a lot lately.

Babysitting Em's kids tonight gave me some quiet reading time after they'd gone to bed.  I finished (all but the apendices) the Mindless Eating book.  It has some good principles and a lot of interesting info!  I'll write about my Work on 3 things later, once I've solidified them.

I also read Lindsay's blog earlier today, and was reminded of why I should be eating to live:

"There are...tons of studies (both in the lab and clinical with people) and in peer reviewed journals that show eating meat, dairy and other animal products cause cancer and other sickness. It's the proteins in these animal products that turn cancer on and off, and they exist regardless of where the animal came from or what it was fed or how it was treated. The evidence is indisputable, a whole foods, plant-based diet is the only diet that is healthy, will prevent and reverse disease and is also the only diet that is truly sustainable for our world."  Yikes!  Need to do better.

Today:
W: 143
E: 3ish hours of gardening
B: n/a
L:  bananas, a peanut butter and honey roll-up, a bagel
D: rice, curry, quesadilla, lettuce with manderin oranges and dressing, popcorn, milk, a bit of quinoa and veggies.

All or nothing.

"With me, it's all or nothin'" and more nothin' than all lately, apparently.  Ate a lot, exercised not at all. Great plan for long-term happiness and longevity.  Need to find some other stress-combating strategies.
On the plus side, I lost some of Wednesday's binge pounds.  On the down side, I may have gained them all back tonight.

Today:
W: 139.8
B: n/a, wasn't hungry
L: banana (12:15ish)
S: banana, grapes (1:30ish)
S: bowl of chili, 3 peanut butter and honey roll-ups (didn't feel hungry, but was super shaky, and kept eating).
D: rice, saag paneer, mango lassi
S: bite of key lime pie, ice cream
S: bowl of chili, 2 peanut butter and honey roll-ups

Minimalist eating.

Beth and I went over to Mariel's tonight to help her determine what she still needs to get for the mission.  Being in a college apartment and clearing closet space for Cassandra to stay in my room during the Wrights' stay has made me want to just get rid of more than half my stuff, and live uber-simply here, and have the ability to pack up my belongings in a suitcase and move to Brazil (or Chile, or India, or Georgia) with a few hours' notice.  I love unclutteredness.

I'm also trying to be more minimalistic in my eating.  If I don't need it, I shouldn't eat it.  That's not say that there won't be deviations from this principle...gracious, we eat socially every day! But I eat more than I need on a regular basis, and yesterday was exceptionally food overloaded.  I totally had a food hangover today.  I still overate (by the definition of "more than I needed,") this evening, but I did better than yesterday!

I was talking to Michele at school today, and she asked what I was eating for lunch.  I said that I wasn't because I wasn't hungry, and told her about yesterday's binge.  She said that it was good to know that I'm human, she was beginning to wonder...Boy, am I ever human! :)

Today:
W: 144.2 (yes, I did gain over 5 pounds from yesterday to today)
B: not hungry, didn't eat.
L: not hungry, didn't eat.
D: Spinach, tomato, mushroom, vinegar, bowl of chili, a banana, grapes. About 7pm. Was starting to get hungry.  Ate more than I needed, but didn't give into the 9pm temptation to eat peanut butter popcorn or hummus when I REALLY wasn't hungry.

A not so royal day.

"I am, indeed, a king, because I know how to rule myself." Pietro Aretino

I know how to rule myself, theoretically.  I sure didn't do it today.  I was tired, and tried to use food to compensate. Of course that didn't help.  I ate foods that didn't even taste that great, and were definitely not Eat to Live friendly.  I need to do better at beginning with the end in mind.

Today:
W: 138.6
E: n/a
B: 2 bananas, walnuts
S: green smoothie
L: pasta sostanza
S: 3 apples
S: 2 bananas, peanut butter, 2 rolls, marshmellows, marshmellow popcorn
D: Cafe Rio salad (rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, cheese...asked for it without it, but was binging anyway), cookies, marshmellow popcorn
S: king sized payday

I was reading the ETL blog the other day, and Emily posted about the plan and how "stopping before full and eating only when truly hungry" is a lot harder than the eats and don't eats of the plan.  AGREED.
That's what I need to work on...stopping before full and eating only when truly hungry.  Maybe I'll include a hunger analysis on my food log each day...

What a difference a day makes...

I LOVE essentrics and Eat to Live.  I haven't lost any significant amount of weight in the last while, but this week I've been eating better and have done essentrics two days in a row.  Even one day of eating well and doing essentrics makes me feel so good!  And I had the energy to do a day at school, faculty meeting (who knew that they lasted forever long?! I guess an hour isn't really that long, but in my mind, 4:30 is time for eating, or homework, or class!), Hope of America, and a second viewing of The Hunger Games with Amy and Beth.  Good day!

Today:

Cleansing and Empowering

Today I had an interview with President Mackey to renew my temple recommend.  As we were talking about the Atonement, he said that the Atonement is not just for cleansing us of sin, but that it also empowers us, and that we need to make sure that we are availing ourselves of both parts of the Atonement.

I'm kind of a do-it-myself sort of girl, but I am learning that that doesn't work.  And there are some days (as in every day that I do something good and stop to think about it!) that I look at what I've done, and I just know that I've had Heavenly Father's help in getting everything done.  I am so blessed.

Not to be sacreligious, but I feel like ETL is cleansing and empowering too.  Elder Bednar teaches about how the body and the spirit are connected and that we need to take good care of our physical bodies.  Sister Tanner talked about how we can't feel the Spirit as strongly when we abuse our bodies.  I feel better physically and spiritually when I don't eat too much, and when I eat to live.

Friday and Saturday entries (Dating Dairy, and Healing)

I went home with Beth, John, Jesse, and Mathis last night, and didn't get home until late, and just got back to Provo tonight, so we'll play catch-up and include both Friday and Saturday's blog posts here:

DATING DAIRY

Apparently the decision to consciously eat dairy on Wednesday opened a whole bingey can of worms.  Because I'd eaten Cassandra's leche asada earlier in the week, I justified eating lots of non-ETL foods on Friday.  And I mean lots.

As Natalie said, sometimes you have to go backwards to realize how important it is to you to move forward.  Dabbling in dairy is like dating a boy that you like, but that you KNOW is bad for you (DD comes to mind).  If you let the idea in, it's hard to get it out.  You have to let go, knowing that it's not what you really want.  And sometimes you have to make that mistake, or have that experience, to figure out that you really don't want it, that it's just a cheap substitute for what you really want (a truly happy marriage, or a truly healthy body).

I'm not saying that I'll never eat dairy again.  My body did surprisingly well on it's junk-food-diet-for-a-day.  But I didn't feel my best, and understandably so.  Dairy isn't evil, it just isn't for me.  Dairy and I were not meant to be.

W: 138.2
E: ess a/a
B: bananas, 2 burritos with potatoes, onions (fried in sausage grease), salsa/ketchup
L: 3-5 cinnamon rolls, cake

HEALING

Today I slept. And slept. And slept.  (Like the pioneers walked. And walked. And walked. Only, with the lazy modern-day version).  I think my body and mind needed it.  I also got some essentials oils from a friend of Mother's and feel like they're already helping to heal my hip/knee issues.

And I came back to eating to live today.  Oh, que alivio!  Mother is wonderful, and makes it easier with lots of ETL-friendly options, and I appreciate that my family doesn't vocalize their feelings on my lunacy (I mentioned that ETL has helped lupus patients and J. said something diplomatic like that she'll keep that in mind, or fair enough), but it's still a choice.  And one I'm GLAD TO MAKE!!!

Today:
W: ?  Probably not great, given what I ate yesterday
B/L:  green smoothie (canned peaches, banana, spinach), a few tomatoes and onions
D: beets, cauliflower, cabbage, salad with beans, a banana

Feeding the Hungry Heart

That's the title of one of Geneen Roth's books on emotional eating.  I learn a lot about myself when I read her books. I don't have a lot of discretionary reading time these days, but I'm trying to recognize why I eat when and what I do, as she advises.  This morning I ate a banana and some walnuts, not because I was hungry, but because it was breakfast time.

A couple of  hours later, I headed to the kitchen in search of something to eat.  I wasn't hungry.  Not even a little bit.  But I was stressed about homework, and wanted to procrastinate it.  I thought about all the things I could eat.  And even though some sounded pretty good, I recognized that I was just in search of relief, and that eating wouldn't provide it.  Eating when I’m not hungry doesn’t help me.  It doesn’t calm my stress and anxiety.  It doesn’t fill my lonely heart.  It doesn’t get my homework done, my fence fixed, my lawn done, flower gardens planted, or my thesis written.  I'm sure that I will stress eat again sooner or later, but I didn't this morning!

Today:
W: 139.4
E: essentrics l/b, pm yoga
B: banana and walnuts (about 8am)
L: banana, apple (about 12pm)
S: raisins and walnuts
D: banana, spring mix and dal, and more dal, and a few spoonfuls of lentils.  I could live on those things.  And I do (with a lot of greens and fruits and other legumes in the mix!)

What I wouldn't do...

I'd do almost anything for someone else.  I've said no to meat since October, and to dairy and eggs since January (although I've eaten breads that I was pretty sure had dairy in them), but today I ate some of Cassandra's leche asada just to please her.  (It was delicious, too!:) She was happy, I didn't die, and all is well.

Today:
W: 141.6
E: essentrics a/a,
B: grapple and walnuts (it was at 2:45 pm, so I don't know if it really counts as bkfast, but it was my first meal)
L: spring mix, spinach, tomatoes, palta, mushrooms, chili, banana (about 5pm)
D: 3 bananas, pieces of grapple, a few kernels of popcorn

Spring Break, baby!

I went to the temple early with Beth, Rachel, Asael and Michael. Came home and ate too much to try to stay awake to be alert enough to go on campus to study with Katie.  It turned out it was her birthday!  So we didn't meet up.  I stayed home and read and slept and read and slept...it was glorious!  So then I ate too much again.  And again after fhe.  But it's spring break.  What are you going to do?!

Today:
W: 137.4
E: n/a
B: banana, walnuts, chili, 2 tortillas with peanut butter and honey, and apple, and a couple of carrots
L: big salad, 1/2 batch of peanut butter popcorn

Easter

I have thought more about Easter this year than in years past.  Probably because I gave a talk on it in Sacrament Meeting today.  (During which I said "um" at least 37 times, according to Amy's count during the second half of my talk...Didn't even realize that I do it.  Something to work on :) I am SO ETERNALLY GRATEFUL for my Savior, Jesus Christ.  Thanks to Him, and His incomparable sacrifice, I will see my loved ones again.  I can change and become more like Him.  I can return to Him.

Today:
W: 137.2

Saturday

is a special day.  I slept in, went to the temple with Beth, took a nap, and went to John and Jesse's to spend time with Laura and Whitney and their clan. Don't know what all I'm feeling about family.  Just know that part of it is envy.

W: 138.2

Can vegans even use cell phones?

Famous quote by our own Harry Potter.  Tonight we had a murder mystery dinner, (SO MUCH FUN!) and I ate salad while everyone else ate Amy's delicious-smelling chicken.  It smelled delicious, and I'm sure it was, but I'm so used to being different in what I eat now, that it doesn't bother me anymore. And, yes, this vegan uses cell phones :)

Hope.

The only thing more powerful than fear is hope.  That's a thought from the evil President Snow (and I didn't put in quotations because it's not a direct quote...just sayin') from The Hunger Games, which I watched tonight with my girls.  It was SO GOOD.  And made me think so much.

I remember a part, I think it's in book 2, where Katniss is at a party in the Capitol, and the people are taking pills to make them throw up so that they can come back to the party again and gorge themselves some more.  Terrible.  While people are starving to death, or barely scraping by in the districts.  I don't live a Capitolistic life-style (I live in a capitalist society), but I live exorbitantly compared to so much of the world's population.  I have everything I need, and sometimes more than what I want.

I hope to do more to help those who don't have enough, whether it be education, love, food, or anything else that I can give.  I hope to become more myself so that I can serve better. And I hope to continue to heal my own food issues.  I feel blessed to have come to know about ETL, and blessed to be able to do it, and hope to continue to improve in this and other areas of my life every day.  Hooray for hope!!! It comes through Christ and will heal every hunger and hurt.

Today:

Live Foot Plan

I realized last night that President Tanner's (I was calling him Dr. Tanner in my head...too much grad school! but today was the last day of class! :)) counsel about having a live foot should work for eating too.  So I came up with a list of Live Foot Plans, and tried some a couple out today...prayer, and herbal tea.  It worked!  Going to keep the list in my planner so that it's available at almost any time.  As Natalie told me once, sometimes you have to go backwards to realize how important it is to you to go forward!

Choices

I've made some pretty stupid ones in my life.  Not anything life-altering as far as one decision is concerned, but I'm not as far along as I could be, as close to God as I should be, because of some of my little, every day choices.

I was looking up a Harry Potter quote, thinking that it said that our choices determine who we are (which they do that too), but the quote really says "It is our choices, Harry that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

I don't claim to be a genius or anyone particularly special.  My abilities are not extraordinary.  But I am NOT living up to my potential right now.  I'm avoiding what needs to be done, or doing perfunctory work towards it.  I'm eating too much and sleeping too little, and thus blocking out the frustration and guilt, but also the Spirit.  Not okay.  But tomorrow is another day, and I'll try to do better about making my choices ones that show who I really am as a daughter of God, and who I really want to be...a daughter of God who is achieving her potential.  For real.

Enjoying movement

Sister Elaine Dalton danced growing up, and started running later as a way to "enjoy movement every day."  I love hearing her talks, especially when she talks about running.  (Trying to find one she gave at a CES fireside that was ALL about running...) I also love the premise of enjoying movement every day.  I did today: essentrics in the morning, and a short, but beautiful run to Susie's in the moon and starlight with the scent of fresh, growing grass and blossoms!  So blessed!

Today's stats:

I LOVE conference.

We had General Conference yesterday and today...I'm SO GRATEFUL for a LIVING PROPHET and for the things that I'm taught by God's servants.  Most of what stood out this go 'round were things that I've been thinking about/feeling...things to work on, do, change, etc.  And now that I know that I was on the right page (already knew...just now have more motivation to do!) I can go forward and do!

Today's stats:
W: 142.2
E: pm yoga
B and L: ayundando
D: salad, dal with rice, beans, fruit salad, nuts, banana, several rolls, piece of bread
