Today I ate to live (except some of my veggies were sauteed). It just feels so much better. I did eat a lot, but 2 salads in one day...awesome! And, for the millionth time, I realized that there is always a choice. There has never been a restaurant or party where there wasn't something I could eat. It's my choice. My detox head-ache is telling me that I'm making the right choices now! :)

Focus and Presence
I did a lot better about WHAT I ate today, but need to work on HOW MUCH I eat.
My conference talk today was so good. Here's a favorite line: "The Savior banished from His life any influence that might take His focus away from His divine mission." I have a lot of things in my life that distract me from what I should be doing, and I need to get rid of them.
Over the last few months the idea of my mission on the earth has been something that I've thought about quite a few times. Satan is a sly punk, and uses everything he can to take our focus away from God. I need to be present, to be tuned into the Spirit.
What I eat and how much I eat definitely affect how present I am, as do exercise and sleep. So, in a way, taking care of my body is essential to me being able to fulfill my role here on earth. No pressure! Lots to do! :) I weighed in today heavier than I've been in a while. It's time to change, time to be true to what I know.

When I choose to eat dairy and sugar, I know that I won't feel good the next day. And tonight, after a good ETL day, I wasn't even hungry, and practically had to talk myself into eating junk food. WHY am I doing this?

Day 2: Disillusioned, disgruntled, dis...
I think I'm just tired, but tonight I'm done with people, and boys in particular. Nothing specific happened, but that's the problem. I happen to think that I'm pretty spectacular, and most people who know me would agree, I think. However, that group of people apparently doesn't extend to eligible young men. Whatever. So I want to eat sugar to compensate for the boy issues, but that won't help, or make me less tired, or make my incredibly slow prince charming come any faster, so I won't.

Be true today.
One of the many great things that I learned/was reminded of at church today was this: Be true for just one day. President Monson: "Each of us can be true for just one day--and then one more and then one more after that--until we've lived a lifetime guided by the Spirit, a lifetime close to the Lord, a lifetime of good deeds and righteousness."
I loved that idea of being true for just one day in connection with treating my body well too. I have a tendency to be all or nothing with that, and if I make a bad choice, I justify making more and more of them until I'm stuffed to the gills and not any less tired than when I started! But I can't get away from being me. I tried last night, and even though I ate practically everything I could think of, I only gained 3 pounds, which will be mostly, if not all, gone by tomorrow.
Six weeks from Tuesday, I will turn 31. While I have adhered to ETL principles off and on for over a year, I've never done the suggested six full weeks of it hard-core. I want to do it to see what I can achieve, and as a birthday present to myself. Here are my key indicators (Preach My Gospel term...in this case, things that I feel are relevant to my physical progress) that I will report on in the blog:
Sleep (S). The more that I have, the less I binge.
Weight (W). I'll weigh in every day, and try to add some before and after measurements as well.
Exercise (E). I'm shooting for 45 minutes to an hour a day.
Eat to Live report for each meal (B, L, D). One day at a time. No snacks, 1 plate, eat in public.
Reading (R). I want to do a little ETL reading each day. Mostly from the book, but plant-based blogs can work some days too.
Sharing (Sh). On the days that I share about Eat to Live, I'll tell about that.

Sh: Talked to Kristen about ETL today. We talked about the cancer part of things and how we've been led to believe so many things about the food that general society views as healthy that aren't true. She's almost done with the book, and was so excited to find out that I meant for her to keep the copy of the book that I gave her. She's excited to start her 6 weeks, and was also happy to hear that I lost 20 pounds just doing it part time last summer. Cheese is her hardest thing.

Future Triathlete!
I rode 13 miles on a road bike today (all 13 miles in the same gear...because I'm smart enough to think about things like shifting gears...ha ha!) and LOVED it! Who knew that tris could be so much fun? Impressive how much dedication doing well in a sprint, much less a real triathlon, takes.
My dedication to my diet went out the window tonight, though. I'm learning that stress and glumness aren't binging triggers anymore, but that cansansia sure is! The more tired I am, the more I eat once I start.
Here's to the next 6 weeks...I want to REALLY do ETL, and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. And SLEEP more so that I don't feel like I have to fuel my body purely on food!

Compensation.
Whenever I'm tired, I eat more. I guess it's a way for my body to try to gain the energy that it needs from sleep from another source. Lots of eating today because I'm so tired. Also, I need to get back into the groove of a schedule. I've missed exercise more than once this week because I haven't done it first.

Making it happen.
The other day in a commercial (I think it was for Red Bull), someone said "You can dream about it, or you can go out and make it happen." I've got a long way to go, and my steps are often baby steps, but I'm going out and making my dreams happen. :)

Coming to myself.
My conference talk today was by Elder Hales about coming to ourselves. I did that somewhat today by eating things that are good for my body. Life is so amazing...so full of opportunities to grow and change and progress. I have so much work to do, but it feels good to be taking even one little baby step in the right direction.

What I really want.
Sometimes what I really want requires doing things differently than everyone else. And sometimes I take a break from being different. Today was one of those days. I hadn't eaten meat for 8 months (since October 17th), but I ate sushi today. Delicious! Tomorrow I'll begin 6 weeks of real ETL, (in preparation for my birthday in 7 weeks!) but today I let loose.

Remind me who I really am.
Yesterday I was introduced to my new favorite song. It's Kelly Clarkson's Dark Side. Such a good song. Some lines I love: "It's hard to know what can become if you give up." "Remind me who I really am."
Yesterday, even before hearing the song, I was thinking that the inchadadness I was experiencing wasn't really me. As a child of God, I deserve better than that. A thought from church today was that disobedience is a form of pride...thinking that you know better than God. Yikes!
I did pretty well until this evening. Then I ate Hello Dollies, and leche asada and a can of chili with corn chips. Sometimes I need to remind myself of who I really am!
Today:
W: 140.4
B/L: (at 11ish) glass of green smoothie, a few walnuts

I choose to change.
Yesterday was not a good day because I didn't make good choices. It took institute and talking to my parents to pull me out of my psuedo-rebellious funk. Today has been great, because I choose to change. I say choose rather than chose, because it's not a one-time thing. Choosing the better part (to repent and change) is a hard choice, an every day choice. I'm grateful I changed today's actions for the better. AND, I got to work my first temple shift. What could be better than spending 5 hours in the temple? I also got to spend time with my roommates, but the movie that we watched wasn't fantastic. I vote that next time we just do dinner or something where we can talk.

Habits.
Tonight after institute I went to Walmart. While I was standing in the checkout line, a cute little boy (latino...made me miss my school kids!) picked up a toy cell phone and started talking into it. I think he just said goodbye, and then it sort of looked like he was trying to take a picture with it. He was so little and so cute, and watching his actions reminded me of how much kids pick up on. I've been doing things (skipping workouts, staying up too late, wasting time, avoiding things that need/ought to be done) that I don't want my kids to pick up on. I need to start changing now. I'm going to go read my conference talk and get ready for bed, and be there by midnight. I choose to change.

Live and learn
I totally binged last night (and gained 5 pounds in the process!) This morning I was able to run and do essentrics, but I've been kind of "blah" and dragging, and cloudy-headed the whole day. Eat to Live is the way to go. I know that, but it's doubly reinforced when I don't live it. Yuck.
In other news, I successfully defended my prospectus today! On to the next step! Hooray for progress!!!

I'm just a girl who can't say...
"No!" I'm getting better at it, but I still really stink at it. The worst are the times (like today) when I should say no to myself (or "that's enough!") and I don't. And I still think that I'm afraid of what I could and should be physically. Self-sabotaging baby.

Worshipping.
Bob Bullough's comment at our grad student conference on Thursday about how when we study, we worship has stuck with me. And I've come to the conclusion that anytime we do something that is pleasing to God, helping us feel His love, or become more like Him, we're worshipping.
So when I eat right, or get enough sleep, or read my scriptures, or think kindly of someone, or choose to love, or go on a beautiful hike with ward friends, I'm worshipping. We hiked Stewart Falls today, and it was lovely. Soooo good to be outside! And with people. I've been in my room all week working on thesis things, and people are a great novelty to me right now! I was happy to be able to worship with friends in that way today.
And I talked about Eat To Live with Michelle and Bethany. I try to avoid being preachy, but when someone asks, or if it naturally comes up, I'm happy to share what I do, and why I do it.
And I finally did some worshipping in the form of studying, this evening. :) (Also snuck in some music worshipping too!)
Today:
W: 137.2 (was it the tortillas or the later eating I wonder?...usually if I lose a little, I keep it off unless I binge, but I'm still not doing too bad!:)

B: 2 cups green smoothie
L: wheat tortilla with refried beans, grape tomatoes, orange, watermelon
D: 2 bananas, spoonful of peanut butter, 1/2 quart of green smoothie.

That which does not satisfy.
I stayed up until 4am watching Melissa and Joey, and parts of random movies, and reading some Fat Cat, instead of going to sleep like a sensible person. It's almost like I'm afraid of too many too good days.
One of my scriptures this morning (actually I got up at noon, so this afternoon) called me to repentance:
2 Nephi 9:51 "Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy."
I've spent too much time in my life on things that don't satisfy.

Mountains to climb.
This morning, on my walk/run, I went the hilly route. As I was going up the big hill (walking at the time), a lady came down walking and said "You're brave to go UP the hill." I laughed, and kept going, and several steps later started running again, running up the rest of the hill, and most of the way home. Without pain! :)
Almost as soon as my fellow morning-enjoyer made the comment about going up the hill, I realized that my conference talk for today would be Elder Eyring's Mountains to Climb. It's always amazing how God puts things together for us like that. He's so good to us. I go through phases where I feel closer to Him. Now is one of the closer times, and I want to feel like this all the time. It's up to me! Study, sleep, running, essentrics, eating right, obeying, music, and prayer all help so much.
Mountains I've climbed today: running, making and presenting my grad student conference presentation, admitting my weaknesses (and hope/faith) to Janet and Stefinee, working on and submitting my prospectus!
Today:
W: 138
E: 20 minute walk/run, essentrics a/a
B: a banana and an orange
L: almost a quart of green smoothie (spinach, peaches, bananas, water), black bean hummus (black beans, lemon juice, garlic, onion powder, cilantro, chili pepper, cumin) with carrots and mushrooms
D: green smoothie (spinach, bananas, strawberries, water)

Pushing myself
I push myself too much in some ways, and not enough in others. And sometimes I have a big push at the end because I haven't pushed myself enough in the past...for example, on my thesis!
For years, I've maintained that I would love to be able to sleep for a week, eat for a week, work for a week, etc., being able to focus on just one task. However, life really is a series of spinning plates, as Elder Bednar taught at a ward fireside when I was at BYU-Idaho before my mission, and we have to run to the thing that's about to crash. Which, right now, is my thesis.
I'm still slightly afraid that I'm going to crash...what if I'm pushing in the wrong direction? However, I feel fine about it...know that it will work out even though it seems impossible. But with God, nothing is impossible. That was the phrase that came to mind as I wrote, so I looked it up, and the context is the angel telling Mary that she'll bear the Son of God, and that her cousin who was called barren, is expecting. God is a God of miracles. And I am doing this thesis because I love Him, and want to be obedient to Him. I will keep pushing until it's done. And I will pass my prospectus defense on Monday, but if not...I will keep trying, and keep pushing until I do. Todo Saldra Bien.
Today:
W: 139.4
E: 1 mile run, essentrics l/b, pm yoga
B: bit of green smoothie, apple
L: my classic salad, walnuts and raisins
D: green smoothie and 2 helpings of walnuts and raisins.

Italian Overload :)
Woke up at 7:15 (instead of my intended 6) and did my knee exercises, a 20 minute walk/run, and a/a essentrics, studied my scriptures, showered, and got ready, all of which were good, but I took my sweet time about it, and didn't clock in to work on my thesis until 11!
I got in a good 1.5 hours of work, and then Amy and I went to a training on the Common Core (I'm excited for it!), for which we received $50 gift certificates to Barnes and Noble! :) Afterwards, we went to Olive Garden, and I ate SOOO much (it was good, and it was warm...I'd been cold since the beginning of our CC training). Self-sabotaging? Maybe. Probably. But tomorrow is another day, and it was warm and yummy.
Today:
W: 137 :)
E: knee exercises, 20 minute walk/run, essentrics a/a, pm yoga
B: small green smoothie and bites of apple, banana, and some grapes as I made the smoothie
L: rest of the green smoothie...made it with regular greens this time instead of spinach...not as sweet, but still good!
D: salad (with dressing, but I think it was still vegan), breadsticks (maybe had butter on them?), some sort of pasta with tomatoes and herbs.
S: Bengal Spice Tea....love it SO MUCH!

Just do your best, do everything you can.
It's like my body knows that I don't have an immediate deadline. I tried to get up after 7 hours of sleep, and didn't. After 8.5, I could. I worked for a couple of hours, then took a 3 hour nap! I don't know how I'm going to ever pass my prospectus defense if I can't get into the habit of REALLY working for at least 8 hours a day. And my prospectus defense is scheduled for a week from today! YIKES!
I think going to the library or to my school for my 8 hours would help. I'll try that tomorrow.
I did an interval cardio workout from TT today and listened to The Middle by Jimmy Eat World during part of it. Here's a line I love from that song: "Just do your best, do everything you can..." I've been working hard on my thesis, but I haven't been doing my best, or everything I can. ARREPIENTATE!
Today:
W: 138.2
E: 16 minutes of TT cardio intervals, essentrics l/b, pm yoga
B: 2 bananas, walnuts
L: spring mix, palta, tomatoes, mushrooms, chickpeas with lemon and bouillon, apple.
D: green smoothie- spinach, bananas, frozen peaches

Meant to Move.
Watching Dance Academy has inspired me. I need to take ballet again. It's time-consuming. It's hard. It's totally out of my comfort zone (hello tights and leotard and showing more of my body than I feel comfortable with!). But I loved it when I did it, and I want to do it again. And be better this time (as in not being done just because the semester is, etc.)
Running is another thing I need to do. My run last night was short, but oh-so-wonderful!
I WAS MEANT TO MOVE!
Excited for tomorrow and running (did I tell you that I've been feeling like my running and my thesis are correlated...that the more consistent I am with my running, the better I think I'll be at focusing on and finishing it?...well, I think there's a connection.) and stretching and MOVING!
Today:
W:137.8
E: pm yoga, walk with Amy
B and L: ayunando
D: spring mix, palta, mushrooms, tomatoes, chili, 2 bananas, walnuts and raisins

It's my night to howl... I mean run.
The moon is looking pretty full tonight. After a day of playing (movie and lunch with the girls), working, (sent my drafts into Stefinee after some more revision), serving (went to the temple:), and playing (watched the last 2 episodes of DDD with Beth to prep for Monday, then spent an hour at John and Jesse's worshipping the babies), I still couldn't get running out of my head. So I went at 12:37am ! :) It was so worth it, though. I LOVE the way summer SMELLS...so alive. And the pavement was still slightly warm, and it was just beautiful. So grateful to be able to MOVE.
Today:
W: 139 lbs
E: 1.25 mile run, essentrics a/a
B: green smoothie
L: salad at Red Robin
D: chickpeas, a banana, nuts and raisins
AND Jessica K.'s boyfriend is vegan...because of Eat to Live. So impressed.

Brain dead and sleep deprived.
I have GOT to get used to this having to study all the time thing! Yesterday I did well, but today, my brain is just fried! Keep trying to get into my reading and writing and just can't. So I'm going to go to bed early and try writing in the early am. That always seems to be my most focused time anyway. And then I'm going to go on my roommate date to see Snow White and the Huntsman, and go out to lunch! Love my girls!
I could tell that I was tired today by how I ate too...my body seems to crave more food when I'm tired, as if it thinks it can get compensatory energy from the extra food.
And so much for my goal to do essentrics every weekday in June...ha!
Today:
W: 138.4
B: walnuts and 2 bananas
L: hummus, carrots, banana(s)
D: green smoothie, can of beans.
