Hormonal and emotional calls for food are trumping my desires for slimness today. Ate when I wasn't hungry. But I didn't give in to sugar or peanut butter...jk. I did eat pb.
Today:
W: 141.8
E: pm yoga
S: 6 hours
11:00 banana, walnuts. Not really hungry.
4:45 dal, banana, 1/2 quart green smoothie (spinach, banana, peach). A little growly?
6:30 1/2 quart green smoothie. Trying to wake up from a nap.
8:30 chili and corn chips. Not hungry.
9:15 banana, 2 tortillas with peanut butter and honey. Not hungry.
Every day is a miracle. My journey to better health and disease prevention is a miracle. Here I'm recording my progress towards being healthier, stronger, better.

Saturday is a special day...
It's the day we sleep in to recover from the week! I woke up briefly to help Beth (prayed for her to find her temple recommend), then went back to sleep until 11:30 when John texted to make sure that I'd made it home alright. What a great guy!
Had a lazy afternoon and then spent the evening at Nancy and Brent's wedding bbq. I LOVE MY FAMILY! (and think that JA would fit in swimmingly...:) And yes, I stuck to my plant-based plan (if the plan includes three rolls...)
Uncle Joseph (they're back!!) said that I'd kept myself lean and trim and that it probably took some effort. I said something about running...but that's not what does it. I love being plant-based, but still worry about what my family will think of it...I skipped Ruth's meat station in the line, and didn't fess up to being mostly plant-based to Uncle Joseph. Need to be more transparent?
Today:
W: 141.6
S: 7 hours
E: essentrics a/a, l/b, mowing the lawn
3pm banana and walnuts...little shaky, but no stomach hunger.
6:30 3 rolls, cherries, fruit salad with bananas, grapes, cantelope, watermelon, cob of corn...not really hungry, but eating socially.
9:15 greens, tomatoes, chili, cilantro, 2 bananas

Choosing.
What I am and what I accomplish is a result of my choices. It's been hard for me to get/stay below 140 because I've been choosing to overeat, or to eat not-so-good-for-me food. Yesterday was a great day...up early, so effective, ate when I was hungry-ish and not when I wasn't.
Al final I chose to eat a lot more today!
Today:
W: 137.4!
E:
S: about 7 hours
10:00 banana and an orange. I wasn't growly-tummy hungry, but was feeling a little lethargic and weak, so I decided to eat.
12:30 greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, chili, 2 bananas
3:30 can of cashews, carrots, sunflower seeds
8:30 rice, yellow curry
2:00 2 bananas, 2 tortillas with peanut butter and honey

Deliverance.
My conference talk today was about deliverance. One example that Elder Perry used to illustrate how God delivers us, contrasted two different experiences with deliverance. The group that was delivered quickly had been humble and faithful and obedient. The group that had to struggle through deliverance was slow to remember God and to ask for help.
There are many things from which I need deliverance. One is my tendency to abuse my body with the amounts and kinds of food that I eat. Another is my habit of sleep deprivation. Still another is my habit to avoid doing things that I think are impossible because they are difficult.
Today is a day of deliverance. I'm up early to write and get ready for interviews. I'm going to make a green smoothie and eat it when I'm hungry and not when I'm not. And I'm going to get 7 hours of sleep tonight like I did last night. I'm trying to be humble and remember my God and ask for His help instead of stubbornly trying to do it on my own.

3:00 pm Ate a banana and some walnuts. I was starting to feel like I could get hungry, and I knew that I'd be in the temple all afternoon and evening. Now (11:30) I'm starting to get that lovely, light feeling you get when you haven't eaten for a while, but I'm still not hungry! It feels good to listen to my body!

Temor.
I'm afraid of failing. At my thesis. At liking my boss. (Don't worry, she told us today that team leaders have to be at a meeting at her house next Monday. The day my 3-years-in-the-making family reunion begins. You don't own me! Except she kinda does.) At losing these last few pounds. At trusting my body enough to listen and obey.
I did better today on both the thesis and the eating, but still need work. I'm going to bed early tonight in hopes that more sleep will mean less distracted eating. We'll see.
Today:
W: 140
S: 6 hours
E: 2 hours of helping Ben and Erin move.
11:00am orange and banana. Slightly hungry. Not too bad, though.
5:00pm Not really hungry, but I ate because I felt like I had to get some greens in me. Then I kept eating because I was tired and didn't want to go help with the moving process. 2 bananas, greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, cilantro, chili, 2 pb and honey roll ups.

Pioneer Day! Finding freedom.
I read a couple of pages of Geneen Roth's book Breaking Free from Emotional Eating this morning. I am such a creature of habit, and often eat emotionally too. Geneen's premise is that if we trust our bodies enough to eat when we're hungry, we'll get to the weight that our bodies need to be. I almost always eat more than my body needs, and my eating habits include eating when it's "time" to eat, and eating when I'm not hungry at all. Like this morning. So, for the next few days, in addition to writing down what I eat, I'm going to write the times at which I ate, and whether or not I was hungry before I ate. I'm going to try not eating at my regular mealtimes, and see if that helps me stay in touch with my body better.
I think that I tried not eating until I was hungry a couple of years ago, and found myself getting cranky at school, but I've RARELY been cranky when I'm hungry since I've gone plant-based, and really, if we listen to our bodies, they'll tell us what is needed, so I'm going to try it again.
I also did my cardio on the mountain today. Running and being outside is so liberating!
Today:
W: 139.4
S: 5.5
E: 30 minutes walk/run on the Bonneville Shoreline trail. I love the way the mountain smells!
8 am ish banana, not hungry.
9:30 am ish ate a couple of grape tomatoes, a bite or two of beans, a few grapes and two more bananas as I was making my lunch for the day. Wasn't hungry. I'm going to take food to campus in case I DO get hungry, but am going to try to not eat unless I am.
12:00 Felt hungry...maybe stress-related or sleep-deprivation related? but not ravenous. Ate greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and chili. One of the tomatoes was from Susie and Farmer Grant and it was DIVINE! And the fresh, chopped onions totally made the salad! Blueberries, and grapes. I didn't feel over-full, and my body was happy!
5:00 Ate SOOO much. My fiesta mix, 2-3 bananas, and 3 pieces of bread with peanut butter and honey. I was eating to stay awake. Not hungry to begin with, definitely not hungry afterwards!
6:00 Ate aloo, curried veggies, brown rice, dal, and cucumber salad at Val's Bollywood night. I've got a food blister, as Father calls it. I was NOT hungry when I ate.
Maybe I need to get more sleep at night (I know I do). Maybe I need to trust my body more, and trust myself to listen to my body. I'm sort of a live-by-the-rules girl, so listening only to myself is kind weird for me. We'll see how this goes tomorrow.

Slower than molasses...
In order to get data collection done by the end of the summer, I need to get a SERIOUS move on. However, I can't seem to move any faster than a crawl, in spite of telling myself that I need to get it done in order to be a real teacher again, and to have a life!
At least I move semi-fast when I'm working out, right?
Today:
W: 140.2 ...That's right. 5 lbs of sugar weight gone in one day. That's the power of plant-based.
S: 7.5 hours
E: 25 minutes of walking/running (with 10 minutes of intervals), essentrics a/a
B: n/a
L: orange and banana
D: banana, walnuts and raisins, 1/2 can of refried beans, green smoothie (spinach, banana, blueberries, strawberries)

Better together.
We had our first official meeting of the Provo Plant-based Girls Support Group tonight! Charity, Kristen, and Tiffany came over for salad, zuchinni, rice, dal and banana bread. We started our 6 weeks today!
And Beth has lost 9 pounds since she started doing plant-based again! She even overcame the temptation to succumb to Mother's pound cake!
In other togetherness news, J.A. and I are going to meet up this Friday. I'm so impressed so far...he's a gentleman, and spells, capitalizes, and punctuates! A rare find. :)
Today:
W: 145.2 (no more sugar binges!)
E: walk to fireside and back
B: n/a
L: n/a
D: walnuts and raisins, greens with lemon, vinegar, and tomatoes, dal, a piece of vegan banana bread.

Progress? Ha!
So the last week I've worked out almost every day, and been pretty good with ETL. Have I lost weight? Nope. Probably because of my sleep habits. So probably as a result of that same sleep deprivation problem, I TOTALLY binged today.
Today:
W:
B: banana?
S: granola bars
L: watermelon, tomatoes, tortilla with refried beans, doritos
S: caramel cookies
D: spinach and artichoke dip with bread, fettucini, lemon poppyseed bread

Learning.
Today was so fun! Spent time with K and Monica, took a nap, and went on a super fun date with John A. I'm learning to just go have fun, to take people as they are and try to get to know them and to be myself. It was great! I loved that he was supportive of my soymilk ice cream. :)

Why do we fall, Bruce?
So we can learn to pick ourselves back up!
The Dark Knight Rises was INCREDIBLE. Which makes me even more shocked and appalled and beyond sad that 14 people were killed in a showing of it in Colorado! Who can go into that sort of movie (or any movie for that matter) and do that sort of thing? Heinous.
I do simple well. Today I ate to live. I exercised. I worked. I spent time with friends. I am rising. And when I fall, I will pick myself up and keep going.
Today:
W: 138
S: 6.5
E: essentrics l/b

Get 'er done!
I went to lunch with some grad school friends today. Two of them are totally done. Thesis defended, submitted, everything. One is going to defend her prospectus tomorrow. And I am where I am...just working on interim texts for my next set of interviews. But it makes me want to just be done.
So I came home after eating, and talking, and grocery shopping, and ate again. Maybe because it was something that I could get done? In any case, I had dinner at 3:30pm after having had lunch at 1:30!
At least I was strong enough not to get the oil-drenched and delicious pasta sostanza at lunch, right? And the minestrone was pretty darn good.
Today:
W: 138.4
S: 6
E: 28 minutes walk/run
B: apple
L: minestrone and italian salad
D: orange, banana, dal, slice of toast with peanut butter and honey.

Let your tongue delight in fatness?
I ate palta AND pb for dinner tonight. (And lots of bread). When I wasn't really that hungry. Still, I'm getting better at listening to my body and not overeating. I'm not stuffed in spite of the fat fest. (We'll see how tomorrow's weigh in looks). One of the blessings of Eat To Live is that I rarely get hungry and even more rarely get cranky when I'm hungry. Too much goodness filling my belly! I feel so blessed to know about this!
I've quit posting how much sleep I get, but I'm going to try to remember again. I was going for 7 last night, and ended up sleeping for 8.5! LOVE summer! (But I can't seem to get into a real schedule! Ideas?)
I also worked out AFTER my library stint. Really didn't want to. But now I'm glad I did. Heading out to paint with E!
Today:
W: 137.8

One month to go.
A month from today I'll officially be under PSD's jurisdiction again. Not looking forward to meetings, but I AM looking forward to being in the classroom again! It reminds me of why I do what I do, and gives me some motivation to get done with Grad School so that I can focus on being a teacher again! I feel like I need to be uber effective with my remaining time, but am not sure exactly how to do that.
I know I need to exercise and eat right, but need to speed up my transitions for sure! It takes me 4 or 5 hours to do what I should be doing in 2.5!
Today:
W: 139.6
E: 5 min. wu, 10 minutes of intervals (outside this time!), 10 minutes of walking with Sarah and running home. Essentrics a/a
B: an apple and a banana
L: n/a
D: greens, tomatoes, fresh strawberries, dal, banana
Didn't give in to the temptation to eat more after FHE! :)

Push-ups, sit-ups, and sprints
We had a member of the high council speak in church today. He shared a story about a young man who grew up in a small Georgia town and wanted to play football. When he was young he met the HS coach, and asked what he needed to do to be able to play football. He was short, over-weight, and not athletic. The coach wasn't impressed. So he told him that he needed to do push-ups, sit-ups, and sprints, and dismissed the kid. The boy went home and started his new regime the next day. Except the coach hadn't said how many push-ups, sit-ups and sprints he needed to do. So he did push-ups until he couldn't anymore. Then he did sit-ups until he couldn't anymore. Then he sprinted until he was winded. And then went back to push-ups... By the time he got to HS, he was one of the best athletes out there.
Our speaker related that to the gospel by saying that there are spiritual push-ups, sit-ups, and sprints that we need to be doing to condition ourselves. I've been trying to do better about those and my physical quehaceres too. I always feel better when I do! My three physical qh are ETL, essentrics, and cardio. I feel so blessed to know what to do to be spiritually and physically healthy. And I'm sharing the good news...three of the girls in the ward that I've talked to about this (Kristen, Tiffany, and Charity) and I are starting a plant-based support group! We're going to meet for the first time next Sunday (I'm cooking a plant-based meal for them) to give them some time to read Eat to Live, and then we'll decide how to support and help each other. It's going to be great!!!

Becoming a product of...
Last night I got about 2.5 hours of sleep. Ridiculous. And all of my own choosing.
With my J boys, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I want in a husband. And what I need to be becoming in order to merecer a man so incredible!
One thing that I want to change is how I spend my "free time." I read a talk the other day by President Erying called Real-Life Education that I loved. He said "We cannot waste time entertaining ourselves when we have the chance to read or to listen to whatever will help us learn what is true and useful." I need to use my time to study and learn things that are of eternal import.
Today as I was thinking about becoming, I was reminded of President Packer saying that he became a product of the Book of Mormon. We really are a product of what we consume. I need to quit consuming so much cotton candy media, and get some more gospel greens and good secular learning smoothies in my media diet. I want to be a product of the Book of Mormon, not just use it as a garnish.
I want to live up to my potential spiritually and physically.
In other related news, even though I binged last night and didn't get enough sleep, I felt happy and healthy today...I'm becoming a product of my eating and exercise habits. Can't say enough good about plant-based eating and essentrics. Essentrics really does change your body so quickly! I didn't do it today, but did every other day this week! Shooting for daily next week.

Day off.
Didn't go to campus today. It was lovely. However it was a binge day. Probably because of mixed emotions...quiero casarme pero no tengo con quien quiero casarme. Y el unico que podria querer asi en estos momentos, parece que no esta ni alli. Churra!

Team work!
Beth wants to do Eat to Live!!!! And she enjoyed her workout this morning WHILE she was doing it. :) We've decided that we're going to lose our weight and then send our stories to Lindsay so that we can be Herbies of the Week together. I'm thinking that if I'm true to the plan, I should be at my goal weight by September 11th. Beth made some DELICIOUS dal for dinner tonight. You can do anything you want to when you decide to just do it and work for it. And it always helps to have a friend/sister alongside!

Me.
A cute boy that I thought I'd had "a moment" with on Monday asked for Liz's number tonight at institute. If she's the kind of girl that he goes for, I'm out! Someday someone will like me for me. In the meantime, I'm not going to quit being me!!! Beth said that she needs to go plant based...I think it's a part of who I am.

Discerning.
I'm learning to pay attention, learning what works for me, and what doesn't. I didn't eat dinner tonight because I didn't have to (Brenda forgot about our cita), and because I wasn't hungry.
Tonight at FHE the beautiful new boy DD (dark and dimpled...so attractive!) was there and remembered my name, but for some reason (probably several, to be honest), I avoided him in some ways...just not feeling it. Real boys work for me. Really pretty ones don't.
Today:
W: 138.4 (1st time below 140 this month!:)
E: essentrics a/a, kickball, helping the Snows move
B: banana and walnuts
L: green smoothie (banana, peaches, blueberry, and spinach), and 2 fresco bean burritos from Taco Bell (thought I was doing well with those, but I just looked up the nutrition info for them...not so much!)

Figuring it all out.
Yikes. I ate sushi again today. It was delicious. I can live without hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, etc, and I'm sure I could without sushi too, but I'd rather not. I go back and forth about being vegetarian or not. I'm not right now, obviously, but I made it 8 months without meat without really missing. Maybe this doesn't have to be an all or nothing gig (not that I've ever done pure ETL ever...what would happen if I really did?). Maybe I just stick to the "mostly vegan" deal, and eat as nutritarian oriented as I can with a cheat day every now and again. Being vegan or vegetarian doesn't necessarily equal being healthy, as I've proved by over-eating, and eating cookies, etc. All I know is that I feel better when I eat to live, but I'm not sure I need to be so strict about veganism (ya que no estoy 100% con ETL) Maybe nutritarian/mostly vegan/reasonable serving sizes would do the trick. I don't know. Estamos en camino. Siempre.

What we could have been...
Amy and I were talking tonight and something she said stuck out to me. Being the brilliant brain that I am, I can't remember now exactly what it was, but it was something along the lines of thinking about relationships past and thinking about what we could have been.
I keep sabotaging myself recently. Can't seem to go more than a day without cheating. I ate sushi again today. And I really could have not eaten fish if I'd really wanted to. There's always a way when you decide. I also ate dairy and sugar. I'm not becoming who I could be, who I should be right now in the eating and exercising department. And I never feel good after eating non ETL. Ever. Time to change. Again.
Today:
W: 141.2
B: banana, walnuts
L: sushi
D1: white bean tuscan soup, bread at Zupas
S: fruit and punch at Angie's bridal shower
D2: dip and chips and salsa, pasta with veggies and TONS of oil, key lime cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory.
D3: leftovers.

My Simple Duty
Today I tried to not eat too much. I ate cheese and dressing on my salad at Olive Garden with Kylee, but didn't binge, and didn't eat more than I needed. It felt good. Sometimes the progress that I make is so minimal, and I keep falling down, that I wonder why I can't be more consistent. But I am growing, and getting better.
K had part of the following quote as her signature quote on the last email she sent me, and I loved it. I tried to do my simple duty today, and it went well! :) It also helped that I took time to read my scriptures and my conference talk. Feeding my soul helps me avoid stuffing my face in compensation.
"...this Helper who will, in the long run, be satisfied with nothing less than absolute perfection, will also be delighted with the first feeble, stumbling effort you make to-morrow to do the simplest duty. As a great Christian write (George MacDonald) pointed out, every father is pleased at the baby's first attempt to walk: no father would be satisfied with anything less than a firm, free, manly walk in a grown-up son. In the same way, he said, 'God is easy to please, but hard to satisfy.'"
Today:
W: 143
E: hour long stroll with Beth and Val, pm yoga
B: banana, walnuts
L: 2 breadsticks, salad, minestrone
D: rice, pumpkin curry, banana

"Fill our Hunger"
One of my favorite hymns has a line that says "Fill our hunger with Thy love." That's the only way to go, really. Like I said yesterday, I keep trying to fill the hole in my heart with food, and it never works! It only gives me unpleasant side effects (I woke up this morning convinced I had a huge stretch mark on my hip from last night's binge...luckily it was just a mark from my waistband digging in, but still!) and distances me from God.
I have a pretty lofty weight loss goal...I want to be at my goal weight by my birthday in a little over a month. I've been trying to lose these last few pounds since last year's b-day (I'm at about the same weight I was in August of last year, when I'm not binging, but it has gotten a lot easier to get below 140.) and haven't done it. I keep self-sabotaging.
Here are some things I'm going to do to help myself heal, to let Heavenly Father fill my hunger with His love:
Take it one day at a time. Not focus on the pounds que me quedan, but on how I'm feeling and healing.
Pray for help when I'm weak. I need to work on feeling closer to God.
Use music as a therapy. Listen to it when I'm tempted to turn to food for comfort.
Say no. To eating when I don't need/want it. To staying up too late. To other things that don't nourish me.
Keep going. Treating my body with kindness is an area I've made a lot of progress in, and one in which I have a lot more room to grow.

Choosing Hope.
Today's RS lesson was on choosing hope. I went to the family ward today for the first time. I don't think I've ever felt so single in my life. It's going to be a tough gig, but I already know some people, and can see people I can serve. Hamish's little sister drew my henna tattoo! :) I thought about starting a new blog called "I'm single and I know it!" but I'm choosing to believe that my principe azul will arrive sooner rather than later, and that there is no long-term need for a blog so named!
I'm also choosing hope in my eating choices. Chris came over tonight and was telling us about his diet. I don't agree with everything he does, but I find eating choices fascinating, and believe that we all need to figure out what works for us. Plant-based works for me. I feel better, happier, stronger, more spiritual and loving when I eat to live. It works for me. So I choose hope each time I make food choices in line with Eat to Live.
At Break the Fast (where I ate Susie's delicious pickles, and watermelon!), Spencer took a picture of my plate. Later, when I was eating again, my food looked pretty, so I decided to take a picture of it! Maybe this will become a trend, maybe not.
